Vinedos de Gabian is a new, small project from Raul Perez’s long-time assistant winemaker Jose Pepino Pereiro Lopez-Quecuty. Pepino works a single 3-hectare terraced, amphitheater-style vineyard named Gabian that he planted in 2011 by himself. He also purchases fruit from local growers that make up a substantial part of the cuvee while his vines reach maturity. The soil is granite sand, the farming is organic without certification, and the winemaking is traditional.
Xanledo is a blend of Brancellao and Caino Longo, hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts and 100% whole clusters in open-top used French oak and steel vats without temperature control, and 40 days skin maceration. The result is a vertical wine with red and dark fruits, iron, flowers, and Asian spices; the palate is light to medium bodied and very elegant in structure. Xanledo shows the great paradox of Galician wine flavor without weight.
