An icon of high-quality, single estate winemaking, this beautiful Rioja Alavesa estate is built around the highest altitude vineyards in the region. The estate dates back to the Middle Ages, but its modern history begins in the 1960s, when it was bought by Jaime Rodriguez, who restored the vineyards and instituted organic farming. His son, Telmo Rodriguez, is one of Spain's greatest winemakers.
Predominatly Tempranillo based, with some Graciano and Garnacha. Fermented in small stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and then matured in oak barrels for some 26 months. Full-bodied, deeply colored and packed with earthy-gamey-smokey flavors. It's an assertive, bold style of Rioja with firm tannins and just enough fruit. Even with this much age the wine still has a captivating amount of structure to it. Could even benefit from decanting.
