Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerona hardly need any introduction at this point. They were architects from Piedmont and around 2000 began their new life chapter making natural wine with local varieties in the lower part of the Penedes. Farming organically, their wines are often disqualified from the actual D.O. for lack of color or enough ABV. Fine by our standards! The “SM” is Sumoll - a vigorously ripening grape with high acidity and produces a wine with way less “fruity” flavor that most. Picked by hand, squashed by foot, whole cluster fermentation in stainless steel and bottled a year later unfiltered with low to no sulfur. It is a little wild and funky, grippy, tart, and a perfect candidate for a slight chill and some traditional Fuet sausage from Catalonia. Get it while you can, these wines don't hang around the shelf for very long!
