This wine is insane! If you’re not familiar with Olivier Rivière - he is a Frenchman that left Bordeaux in hopes to find way less rules and regulations on making fresh “new wave” wine and landed in Rioja 15+ years ago.
Here he is doing something very untraditional with his oldest vines of Viura (75 years old, located near the village of Labastida in Rioja Alavesa) - aging them in Amontillado and Fino Sherry casks for 12 months! The grapes are grown with organic farming (some biodynamic practices) and go through whole cluster fermentation in oak vats before resting 6 months in Foudre and followed by the aforementioned Sherry casks. A slightly richer style of White Rioja, but with a distinctive twist! Perhaps similar in style to some of the white wine from the Jura? Very rare, and incredibly special. Drink this with roasted pork, with a rich fondue, some grilled sausages or hard cheeses.
