Llopart "Leopardi" Brut Nature Gran Reserva Cava 2011
The family at Llopart has joined the ranks of a handful of other top-quality sparkling producers formerly known as “Cava” to now be labeled “D.O. Corpinnat.” Frustrated at the massive amount of cheap sparkling “alcohol water” that has been mass produced as an alternative to Prosecco, these growers made a way to differentiate themselves for consumers under a name that doesn’t quite roll off the tongue easily but does stand for the combination of both Spanish words meaning “heart of Penedès.”
The “Leopardi” is one of their flagship wines and a seriously classy bottle of sparkling. They have been family-owned since 1887, and farming with the utmost care in the Penedes. It is a
blend of 40% each Xarello and Macabeo and 10% each Parellada and Chardonnay matured in contact with the lees in bottle for at least 48 months. Production is limited to 35k bottles annually. Lightly golden, with incredibly fine bubbles and bottled as a Brut Nature - bone dry with no residual sugar. A lovely bottle to share with caviar (why not?) or even with an array of decadent cow/goat’s milk cheeses. Not just a simple bottle, this is rather elegant and worth contemplation.
