Do Ferreiro - Gerardo Méndez - Albariño Cepas Vellas 2011
What many consider to be the very best Albariño in the world, certainly with some of the oldest vines in the region. From one tiny hectare plot (basically a wild garden) in front of the home of Gerardo Méndez with pre-phylloxera 200-year old vines. A very limited wine, obviously, and incredibly special. Grown with the utmost care, organically and hand-harvested. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, spends 12 months on its lees in stainless steel, and doesn't see any French oak whatsoever. A more medium-bodied and serious white from Rías Baixas which shows complex stone fruit, structure, tempered acidity and elegant length. This really shows the capacity of Albariño to age for many years to come. A wine perfectly suited for poached white fish, grilled gambas, or saffron rice with chicken thighs.
