CVNE (Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España) "Viña Real" Rioja Crianza 2016

  • Often overlooked for the glamor of Haro and Rioja Alta, we find a lot of the wines coming from Basque Rioja, Alavesa, to be stunning. This month we opted for something classic. Arguably one of the most famous producers with international acclaim, not many are unaware of CVNE (Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España - aka - The Northern Spanish Wine Company).

Under the label, Viña Real comes this fantastic Crianza which we find to be a step up in quality and refinement from the regular CVNE that you can find chilled in the Madrid airport by the glass. A blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% split between Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano. Aged in a combo of French and American oak for around 14 months. We find it incredibly flavorful, elegant, and light on its feet. Soft tannins and a touch of food-friendly acidity (it is after all from Rioja Alavesa) keep this bottle poised and ready to please. Roasted duck breast with some seasonal squash from the oven would be a lovely way to pair this bottle.
